2019: My Favorite Reissues and Archival Releases

As evidenced by the sheer number of releases and songs on my previous lists, 2019 was an amazing year for new music. But there were also a number of really special reissues and archival releases! I present to you some really special reissues and archival releases:

Arab Strap - Philophobia
Philophobia (the fear of falling in love) is an apt name for this moody and dramatic album from Scottish band Arab Strap, originally released in 1998.

Alice Clark - s/t
This 1972 jazzy soul classic was remastered and reissued for Record Store Day. Not something I would typically listen to but this is fantastic.

Grauzone - Raum
Reissue of Swiss band's funky, dance-y post-punk single from 1980. The intro hits like Interpol's Obstacle 1 while the rest of the song sounds like what a lot of modern bands like The Hecks and Lithics are doing. The release also features an extended version and two reworks.

The Only Ones - Live In Chicago 1979
A crisp recording of a previously unreleased radio show performance by this underappreciated UK punky power pop band.

The Rats - In A Desperate Red
Before there was Dead Moon, there was The Rats -- Fred and Toody Cole's garage punk band. This, their third and last record as The Rats, was originally released in 1983 and long since out of print until now.

Screaming Sneakers - Marching Orders
"Punk" can be such an ugly word but this 1982 EP from Florida's Screaming Sneakers (the short-lived band's only release) is easy on the ears, thanks to a singer whose voice was made for pop music or new wave.

Shellac - The End Of Radio
Two previously unreleased Peel Sessions from legendary noise rock torchbearers Shellac, recorded 10 years apart in 1994 and 2004. Martina Navratilova's name really IS fun to say!

Sporten Är Död - s/t
In 1981, three Swedish girls got together to record a demo of poppy post-punk as Sporten Är Död. Fast forward nearly 40 years later and they were right, Sport Is Dead. I've scoured the 'net and haven't been able to find a full stream or rip of the album (the flipside is a live recording from 1982) but here are a handful of cuts.
