Here's a noisy, fuzzy, lo-fi, (almost) all-instrumental psych funk album from a mysterious band hailing from Estonia (sheesh, that was a mouthful). Wailing guitar and electronic blips and bleeps over rhythmic drumming, some tracks sound like CAVE to these old ears. Between them and Holy Motors, who knew Estonia was such a hotbed of cool jams!

I present to you some really special reissues and archival releases: Arab Strap - Philophobia Philophobia (the fear of falling in love) is an apt name for this moody and dramatic album from Scottish band Arab Strap, originally released in 1998. Alice Clark - s/t This 1972 jazzy soul classic was remastered and reissued for Record Store Day. Not something I would typically listen to but this is fantastic. Alice Clark by Alice Clark Grauzone - Raum Reissue of Swiss band's funky, dance-y post-punk single from 1980. The intro hits like Interpol's Obstacle 1 while the rest of the song sounds like what a lot of modern bands like The Hecks and Lithics are doing. 2020: My Favorite Gigs

  Anyone who knows me knows I don't get out much other than to see live music, so the shutdown of venues and diy spaces REALLY threw a wrench into my social life. Thankfully, I did get to a bunch of good gigs before everything went to hell in a handbasket. Now that shows have been back for a couple months, reflecting on what life was like pre-pandemic is a bit easier. But what really bums me out are all the gigs I planned on seeing but got postponed or cancelled, including Horse Lords x2, The Hecks, Dry Cleaning with Marbled Eye, Cable Ties, Control Top with Weeping Icon and Droids Blood, Negative Scanner, Ethers, Good Morning, Thom Yorke, Puzzlehead with National Photo Committee and Porno Glows, The Cowboys, The Chats, M.A.Z.E., Amyl and The Sniffers with C.O.F.F.I.N, The Beths, Sheer Mag, Stereolab, They Might Be Giants, DEHD, Protomartyr, Kraftwerk 3D, and Squarepusher. 2020: 25 Songs That Got Me Through

  Since time is relative and still pretty meaningless, I trust you won't mind that I'm sharing my favorite songs of 2020 now. Nearly halfway through 2021. 'Cause that's what I do. I take way too long to do these things. It almost makes me wonder why I even bother. Anyways, most of these songs were written and recorded pre-Covid but some touch on very pandemic-related topics like loneliness, isolation and death. And some of the accompanying videos were clearly shot during quarantine, as evidenced by the empty streets in major cities and Zoom-like split-screen that has become a part of everyday life. Years from now I hope I'll be able to appreciate these songs as being damn good and not tied to the worst year of our lives. The artists and their songs deserve as much. The Cool Greenhouse - Alexa!
