2019: My 25 Favorite Songs
April Fools! What kind of a jackass would post their top songs of the year in April of the following year?
So yeah, here's that list:
Amateur Childbirth - Flowchart For Royal Incest
Oh look, another dark and super depressing neofolk song from Australia's Amateur Childbirth!
ANTi-FEDS - Working, Dying
Beastie Boys-style shouting over fuzzy anarcho-punk. Fuck the corporations you work for, bud.
Bananagun - Out Of Reach
This sunny, groovy '60s-style pop track from new Aussie collective Bananagun would've fit neatly on an Austin Powers soundtrack. Yeah baby yeah! <- had to do it.
Blues Lawyer - Something Different
A very relatable poppy punk song for those of us fed up with our lives. I hope it works out this time....
Bront - Ducktales
Egg punk is alive and well in Belgium! Here's a goofy, fuzzed-out track from a seemingly goofy guy named Brent Pauwels.
The Cool Greenhouse - Landlords
Repetitive guitar licks and mumbled ramblings about shitty landlords over Casio beats. What more do you want?
The Cowboys - Now With Feeling
These guys know how to write a damn good song. The one's got it all -- piano intro, sweet saxophone/keys bridge, Keith Harman's lyrical/vocal chops and hooks galore. Giddy up!
DEHD - Lucky
Twangy, sadly optimistic (optimistically sad?) tune from Chicago's best band. So good, it made my list last year too.
Dry Cleaning - Magic Of Meghan
A jittery post-punk ode to Meghan Markle. Who amongst us hasn't fallen in love with her at some point?
Duplo - Dance
Brazilian band's tripped-out dance punk track off their debut EP Dor Dor Dor, BB.
Earache - Here And Then
New Australian duo's lovely, melancholic dream pop song. Close your eyes and let the shimmering guitar and soothing vocals take you away from this living nightmare, if for only a fleeting moment.
Fax Machine - Whitey
WTF is up with these weirdos? I dunno, but this particular song has a funky beat underneath haunting vocals. Are they backmasking the vocals? Are they even lyrics? Beats me.
Fontaines D.C. - Too Real
A big, dramatic alt rock song with a fun chorus to shout along to, if you're into that (I'm into that).
Good Morning - Still Commit Crimes
A super catchy, well-crafted lo-fi guitar pop song from a couple of Aussie jokesters. FYI, the video is an homage to (or a spoof of?) the Arctic Monkey's video for their song Cornerstone. This kid's got way better moves than Alex Turner though.
Hank Wood & The Hammerheads - I'd Rather Be With Me
Dirty, bluesy punk n roll with soul and swagger. It's like a nice, soothing full body massage with an explosive happy ending.
Hank Wood & The Hammerheads - You Could Have It
Initially I was just gonna put the previous song in my top 25 but I love both tracks off their HEADS cassingle equally so fuck it, you could have it too.
The Hecks - My Star
Clocking in at just under 8 min, this shimmery new wave jam requires a longer attention span than most humans possess but hey, you've got time!
Hierophants - Pang
A catchy, jangly psych pop song that's 100% Australian so you know it's a ripper.
Le Villejuif Underground - Post Master Failure
Living in Chicago, I know all about the postal service's failures. Apparently the mail system ain't so great from France to Australia either. Here, Nathan Roche tells us all about it in his super cool drawl over a galloping drum machine beat.
Purple Mountains - Darkness And Cold
David Berman sings about the light of his life moving onto someone else. The video features a cameo from none other than his estranged wife and light of his life, Cassie. Too soon!
Salad Boys - Onwards And Downwards
The B-side to New Zealand's Salad Boys' latest single, it's a noisy, danceable, distortion-laden departure from their jangle pop roots.
Seablite - Heart Mountain
This dream pop song has such a terribly catchy melody that you'll have trouble getting it out of your head. Sorry/not sorry.
Sensual World - Ephemeral Blob
e·phem·er·al : /əˈfem(ə)rəl/ : adjective : lasting for a very short time. Yeah I didn't know what it meant either. This is a fierce, dark post-punk blast that thankfully isn't too ephemeral.
Slush - Middle Name
An adorable, irresistible pop punk song about being young and in love. Awwwww.
The Staches - The Shape Of Their Eyes
The Staches have mastered the art of sounding futuristic and retro at the same time, reminiscent of UK bands like Stereolab, Broadcast, Ladytron, and The Projects, but with punk attitude. This one's got detached, mechanical vocals, squiggly synth effects and a funky groove.
