2019: My Favorite EPs/Demos/Singles/Live Recordings/etc.

I often tell people that I'll be late to my own funeral, so it comes as no surprise that I'm posting my next top 25 list of 2019 on April 21st. Anyway, these here are some of my favorite shorter releases from last year.

Collate - Symptomatic
With a title like that and songs named Symptom, Stabilize/Receive, and Medicine, this is post-punk that is truly a sign of the times.

Constant Mongrel - Experts In Skin
Two new angular post-punk cuts from these Australian vets with a dick joke for a name.

The Cool Greenhouse - Crap Cardboard Pet
Simple. Repetitive. Different. That's what Tom Greenhouse is going for, and the results are marvelous. Casio beats, one-note guitar licks, a smattering of bass guitar and keys, and silly lyrics delivered in a deadpan speak-singing style. It all wraps up into a bizarre and fun post-punk package. Cool indeed.

The Cool Greenhouse - Landlords b/w 4Chan
Yeah that's right, two releases from the same band. My blog, my rules. Get used to it.

Dr Sure's Unusual Practice - Scomo Goes To Hawaii
Five electro-punk diss tracks directed at the Australian PM who went to Hawaii on holiday as the bushfires ravaged the country. Good onya, Doc.

Dry Cleaning - Boundary Road Snacks And Drinks
See? Speak-singing is all the rage these days, especially in the UK. Dry Cleaning's Flo Shaw does it over taut, plodding post-punk. This band is the real deal.

Dry Cleaning - Sweet Princess
Oops!...I did it again. This EP made my 2018 list too even though it was officially released in 2019.

EXEK - Live In Atlanta
Live set of Australian dubby post-punk weirdos. Much more upbeat and accessible than their studio work.

Hank Wood & The Hammerheads - HEADS
No surprise here as both songs on this cassingle made it onto my top 25 songs list. Groovy, swampy punk with soul -- dig it!

Judy And The Jerks - Bone Spur
A thriving and vibrant underground punk scene can pop up in the unlikeliest of places. Case in point: Hattiesburg, MS, home of Dumspell, Pleather, Bigg Band, Big Bleach, and the crème de la crème, Judy & The Jerks. Here's their latest blast of eggy hardcore punk.

Lalalar - Mecnun'dan Beter Haldeyim
Here we have a couple of nasty bangers sung in Turkish, ready-made for sweaty dance floors. Remember dance clubs? Those were good times.

M.A.Z.E. - s/t
The Japanese are notorious and lauded for making super peculiar music. M.A.Z.E. continues that trend with a set of whimsical, off-kilter punk.

Negative Gears - s/t
Dark, bleak post-punk with a sense of urgency. And yes, that's a guy doing a somersault onto a razorblade held up by a finger from a hand emerging from their native Australia on the cover.

Paranoias - Demo
If frantic punk with helium balloon-huffing vocals is your thing, look no further! This new Aussie band's best song Headache sounds like an over-caffeinated Eddy Current Suppression Ring to me.

Plastic Chairs - Analogue Lunch
One benefit of procrastination is being able to slip a late entry into the list! I just recently found out about this Aussie band  and their brand of off-kilter post-punk. The drummer has some serious chops!

Public Service - I'm Gonna Kill That Man
Scottish band's second release of dark post-punk rippers following their 2017 demo. Whoever "that man" is, I'm sure he deserves what he's got comin'.

Salad Boys - This Issue b/w Onwards and Downwards
New Zealand's Salad Boys ditch the Flying Nun vibe and kick things up a few notches with two noisy, distortion-laden bangers.

SAP - 2
The best punk is arguably like the best sex: fast and raw. The members of SAP's proclivity in the sack is none of my business but they sure do like playing fast and raw punk rock. Case in point: "2"

Street Gurgler - Split
Psychedelic punk n roll with a guitarist who shreds and songs about being bullied, being sad, and crazy moms. Very relatable!

Terry - Who's Terry?
Who's Terry, you ask? Well, they're an amazing guitar pop band from Australia that keeps churning out pleasantly weird, toe-tapping ditties. Here are four more.

Ubik - Next Phase
If you're angry and you know it, smash that play button for some fierce and fast Australian anarcho punk. And god damn if that isn't the sexiest album art I've seen in a long ass time. So sexy, it's currently my laptop wallpaper.

The Umbrellas - Maritime
Sweet and refreshing guitar pop from a new band featuring members of much louder and weirder bands Landline, Toyota, Stucko, and Wonder Bread.

Vision 3D - s/t
This Belgian band plays bouncy garage punk sung in French so you know it sounds sexy. Ooh la la!

Warm Bodies - UFO EXTREMO's
Yelps and shrieks and squeals, oh my! Olivia Gibb and co. are back with another spastic set of wobbly, free-form egg punk.

Worm Cafe - s/t
Lo-fi minimal post-punk from yet another cool all-female Australian band. They must grow on trees down there.

But wait, there's more!
